If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Joffe Numeroff

3.0

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, part of the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie set of books, features a cat and little girl as they traipse through the museum, the beach, the gym and the park. The cat eventually ends up back in the kitchen with a cupcake.
The book would be appropriate for readers between the ages of two and five. The illustrations provide a good deal of characterization for the cat. Children may identify with some of the places visited by the cat.
I found some of the scenarios in the book to be an odd juxtaposition with the traditional view of cats. For example, the cat plays in the ocean and wears green sandals. While a cat may enjoy the beach or a museum, it is difficult to imagine a cat doing anything but having a hissy fit in the ocean. Some of the activities and the character created for the cat seem to be more appropriate for an animal like a dog.
