The Struggle by Jennifer L. Armentrout

3.0

“Know the difference between need and love. For what the gods have feared has come to pass. The end of the new has been ushered in. For the sun child and the new god will give birth to a new era and the great creators will fall one by one, reshaping our homes and hearths, reaping man and mortal alike. A bloody path has been chosen, the Great War fought by few is coming, and in the end, the sun will fall and the moon will reign until the new sun rises. Know this: the strength of the sun will be needed to conquer, for the strength of war and cunning will not be enough. Love and need must be reconciled. If not, the great land will perish, for the bull is in the house of the lion.”

So if I’m going to be completely honest, The Struggle was a bit of a… well, struggle. By that I mean it wasn’t nearly as strong as other books in the Covenant / Titans series and at times I had to struggle through it to get to the end. It’s just that while many new developments occur, the overall story was mediocre. Like I just wanted things to be a bit more extreme because as they are, I know they were supposed to be exciting but they ended up being anticlimactic.

The Struggle starts immediately where The Power ended and focuses heavily on the romance between Josie and Seth. I’m all for romance (OBVIOUSLY!) but there needs to be substance to go along with it. Here, it was pretty heavy handed with the undying love declarations and pretty light on the driving action. Though, on the bright side, the few sexy scenes between Seth and Josie are pretty steamy! I’m a huge Seth fan and I’m glad to see him fall in love and be happy and finally have a future worth living for. For Seth its Josie that is his purpose for being and I’m happy for him to be fulfilled even if Josie isn’t the most interesting heroine I’ve ever met. I just really want to see Josie go there! She goes through some pretty heavy stuff
Spoiler Josie is taken prisoner by Hyperion and tortured and fed on by multiple Titans including Cronus.
but there wasn’t enough suffering. I know that sounds terrible but I wanted to get deeper into her psyche. Alex had some heavy suffering in the Covenant series and we really got deep into her soul and I felt for her deeply. In my opinion, we just didn’t go deep enough with Josie and I while I could sympathize with her I couldn’t empathize.

Like I mentioned before, there are many new developments in the saga I’m left with so many questions and not a lot of answers. I assume the whole prophecy is finally in play and will be wrapped up in the next book. As for new developments and questions:
Spoiler 1. Seth isn’t just a god-killer. He’s an actual GOD! (The “new god” from the prophecy) I’m actually fine with this. I don’t really have any questions.
2. Josie is pregnant with Seth’s baby. (For the sun child and the new god will give birth to a new era) WHY???!! I can’t even. Why are there “whoopsie – babies” in the series at all? It’s a little on the nose with the prophecy.
3. Two more demigods are dead as well as several Titans due to Seth killing them. (the great creators will fall one by one, reshaping our homes and hearths, reaping man and mortal alike.) Why aren’t the godly parents of the demigods helping at all? Like get up off your god butts and try to stop the Titans from literally eating your kids! Jeez! Also I’m totally cool with Seth killing the Titans even if it’s totally anti-climactic when he does.
4. Apollo keeps saying that there are “consequences” for killing the Titans but won’t go into detail. WHY???!!! According to the prophecy “in the end, the sun will fall and the moon will reign until the new sun rises.” So I think Apollo is going to end up dying, Artemis will have to pull double duty without her twin, and Seth and Josie’s baby will be the new sun god?
5. The prophecy says “for the strength of war and cunning will not be enough.” Does this mean Athena is going to be a player in the end game?
6. Who is the bull and who is the lion???? What is happening!?

I’m not sure why I feel like nothing really happened in The Struggle. There were a lot of things that could have been amazing
Spoiler IE: zombie battles, showdowns with the Titans, Josie’s abduction and captivity
but I guess they just weren’t focused on enough for me. I think that’s the issue I have; that the melodramatic issues were heavily focused on while the driving action for the overall series wasn’t focused on enough. Actually, this seems like in order to make the final book not insanely long, the boring set up parts were made into The Struggle so the final book can be the big showdown. So here I am waiting eleven more months until I can get my hands on The Prophecy because I’m still definitely going to read it! I love me some Seth! SETH FOR LIFE!
