Persuasion by Jane Austen, Deidre Shauna Lynch

4.0

Though half as long as her other Novels, Persuasion holds just as much personality and character as any of Jane Austen's previous Novels. This being the last published before she died, it shows a huge growth in Austen's writing. She takes a lot of mature routes, almost having someone die and showing huge growth in a lot of the characters.

What continues to baffle me about reading books from hundreds of years ago is how relevant they are today. It really shows how humans are very consistent creatures in terms nature. This very premise is something I have witness for myself in my own life with friends. Seeing a friend pretend not to know their ex, neither acknowledging the vast history they have with each other.

The characters in this books were very versatile, and compared to Emma and Pride & Prejudice, Anne is a much more reserved main character. She is older than the others and I feel reflects Austen a lot. By the time Austen had died she had been unmarried her entire life which I felt was shown through Anne. Especially because Anne and Captain Wentworth were people who had almost been engaged before it seems like maybe a route Austen felt her life could've taken (can you tell I love the movie Becoming Jane?). Either way, the romance in this book was so sweet and beautiful. However, I felt it was lacking for a while. Her books tend to get slow at times, as expected, but this felt slower than the other even though it was shorter. It did pick up quite a bit in the middle but I wish we could've seen more of Anne and Wentworth together.

Although, the profession of love in this one almost entirely makes up for it. It was so sweet and I loved how reserved Wentworth was while still being very expressive of his feelings and respectful towards Anne, so much so he almost let her go again! Anne also just felt so real and refreshing as a character. She contrasted with the very lively company she kept which was probably why everyone loved her so much.

There were so many beautiful moments in this book and it constantly reminded me why I love Jane Austen. There will never be anything like the love shared in marriage in a time were love was almost always second to marriage. Even today, we see love be twisted from it's true meaning, but these novels always help remind me of how beautiful it can be.
