This book is certainly enjoyable and engrossing. I picked it up as a result of loving Ryan Graudin’s Wolf by Wolf duology, both 5 star reads in my eyes, and wanted to give her other works a try. Sci-fi is a new genre for me to be reading so much of this year but this was a great romp of a time traveling adventure with a fun cast of characters that created an interlocked family The adventure was fun, starting with the birth of a baby out of time and spiraling from there with a series of events that went from glances of being a tourist in our history, the technology of the future, and how the ripples of time and space collide when the unexpected results of actions catch up to our characters.
The plot was great and unexpected, the characters enjoyable. The only reason I didn’t rate this book higher was because how lost I became in figuring out where the plot was going in both the beginning and middle of the book. It takes a while to explain Elliot and what exactly was happening to cause these strange occurrences. Once it developed from there, it was a fun ride to the conclusion but the pacing was a bit off for my taste. Also, as much as I loved the characters in their tight unit, I couldn’t relate to them and that detachment left me less invested in the story.
Overall, great sci-fi read if you enjoy time travel and quirky characters with good bouts of humor. I’m excited to continue reading Ryan’s work with either a reread of Wolf by Wolf or a first read of the Walled City in my future.
