White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky

4.0

warning: don’t read this in public if you’re freshly heartbroken of unrequited love

my first Dostoyevsky, I’m hooked

i had a visceral reaction to the ending at Kinokuniya because i was being a scrooge and refused to spend $20 on a 70pg book - one of the best intros and outros of all time

“My God! A whole minute of bliss! Is that really so little for the whole of a man’s life?”
The dreamer - “He himself is the artist of his life and he creates it for himself every hour to suit his latest whim”
“You see that life for them is not forbidden, that their life doesn’t vanish like a dream, like a vision, that their life is eternally renewing, eternally young…the slave of a shadow, of an idea”
“And in vain does the dreamer rake through his old dreams, as if they were ashes”

P.S. hated Nastenka by the end though…manipulative pick-me behavior
