Great first read of the year! It felt like such a welcome breath of fresh air to read Asian inspired fantasy when the ‘popular’ books in fantasy usually have European origins/basis.
The story was quite captivating and I found myself caring for the characters along the way, most definitely. Everything from the description of clothing to instruments and even weapons aided greatly in the world building, which was quite rich.
The only qualm I have is with the pacing. For the moments of heightened action, I felt like the scenes were rushed or too quickly finished. Still, the pacing was not so much a distraction/deterrent to my enjoyment of the story.
Excited to finish the series; will probably
invest in the US cover of the book, too!
