Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
by April Genevieve Tucholke
Thanks to Edelweiss and Dial Books for early access to this title.
A suspenseful and interesting read! I liked the main character, Violet White, and her brother. Some of the other characters are not quite as believable, but the plot makes up for any deficits in characterization. It also took me a bit to get into the book, as I found the narration a bit forced at the beginning. The language made me think we were in the Deep South, but later we find the house is on the Atlantic coast, and they're not far from "Portland" so I assume the book is set in Maine. Once the plot starts to take off, these problems diminish greatly. The ending is quite suspenseful, and, while I somewhat guessed at the nature of the ending, the exact situation was a surprise. I think teens who enjoy the Cassandra Claire "Mortal Instruments" series would enjoy this book as well. As this book is also the first in a series, hopefully the follow up books will be just as good.
