Beartown is unique. This is not your standard Backman tale. It’s dark and lacking the lighthearted whimsy that so frequently helps us through the heartbreak of his stories.
It’s so difficult to put into words the intensity of this novel. I had to put it down many times as I saw my own battles, pain, and shame within the characters. This book will remind you what it means to be human. No one writes about life with so much sincerity and complexity as Backman does.

Please check trigger warnings before reading this book. Several types of trauma are explored through these characters, though it is done very respectfully and truthfully.
Backman has taken great care throughout the story to show the strength, as well as the vilification, of victims and those who stand with them. It’s hard to read at times.

This is a perfect 5 star book for me.
I can’t wait to see what the remainder of this trilogy has to offer.
