Kiss Number 8
by Colleen AF Venable
This was... messy. Mostly in intentional, good ways. I liked that it was complicated and nuanced and depicted human relationships in a realistic way. Maybe I would have liked certain characters stories to be explored a bit more, but at the same time this wasn't about them and they deserve their own stories.
(I don't know. This is definitely the kind of story that lots of people are going to deem problematic, while I think that it's not this story that's problematic, it's that certain marginalized groups - in this case trans people - don't get enough airtime to tell their own stories on their own terms. This individual story is messy but fine, but the structural marginalization of people who are represented in this book is an undeniable form of injustice, which makes this book part of a problematic pattern in society and the publishing industry. Much like the story itself my thoughts and feelings about it are messy.)
I have to say I did like the way religion was handled in this. Which is something I always appreciate in young adult. And I appreciated the ending - which was hopeful while realistically portraying the imperfections of actual humans and their relationships.
Content warning: transphobia, homophobia, forced outing, domestic abuse, toxic friendship, bullying, use of slurs (specifically f-word)
