Much like Bree I am feeling numb after the end of this book. HOLY SH*T. Tracy Deonn is a master. She achieves what so few authors can. She is able to perfectly balance her stories with such believable and compelling characters, a very cool (and well thought out) magic system/world building, and still finds the time to tackle huge topics (primarily grief and racism). I would have read this book I’m one day if I didn’t force myself to savor it. I have never believed a character’s motivations for there actions more than I have with Bree. My only criticism is that I wish she had a bit more agency in this book (I know that’s sorta the whole thing that drives her to the breaking point at the end because of all the pressure on her). I just wish that she would have listened to the people around her and not lashing out in rash ways because she was forced to run away. I wish we got more bad ass Bree for more of this book but I understand this is a book 2 and she had a lot of development to do. She is such a beautiful soul and is one of my favorite heroines I’ve read. Even in the ending when she’s fighting with her grief all over again and may have done some fucked up stuff. I feel like you still know what she’s doing and why (even though it made me wanna throw the book across the room). So, In summary, I will never emotionally recover from this and I need the next book ASAP. Please everyone read this book. (SPOLIER) I also really hope that she reconnects with her root beyond the demon. I know she was feeling crushed by Vera’s expectations and was mad about the consequences she had to suffer because of the bloodcraft but that was one of the most powerful and compelling aspects of the story. When she was yelling at Vera I was shook. I know she feels bad right away but damn. So close to 5 stars but I do feel that it doesn’t stand strong enough as a single story. Definitely feels like a middle of the series book.
