The Beauty and the Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve

3.0

Gabrielle Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve was born in Paris in 1695 & is best remembered for one of the first ever fairy tales, Beauty and the Beast.

Illustrated by MinaLima Design, this book is as visually stunning as Peter Pan before it - with gorgeous rose motifs throughout.

This tale is told in three thirds - the classic Beauty meets the Beast/is imprisoned/falls in Love in the first third, the story of how the Prince became a Beast in the second third, and in the final third the story of Who Beauty Really Is, and a bunch of fairies and incest and Happily Ever After.

This is a true princess fairy story in every sense. Clearly written to prepare young girls for arranged marriage in the 18th century it is an eye opener to 18th century society & manners - in order to marry the Prince it is revealed Beauty is his cousin & therefore worthy of becoming Royalty - obviously widely held beliefs of the time and the dream of all little girls (that their parents really adopted them and their true heritage is royal blood and another life)

No Disney here and no enchanted furniture to be seen. Shame
