The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
by Ann Brashares
Recently, the movie that is based on this book was on tv, and while I was watching it again, it made me want to reread the books it's inspired from. I have first read this book when I was in elementary school, and I remember it took me a few months to get through it. Now, it took me only a few hours.
It is an easy read, perfect for those summer days when you don't want to get involve in something to deep and complicated, but just want to get your mind off things. The Sisterhood is perfect for that. The beauty of this book does stand so much on how the author writes, but it's what she writes about. The friendship described in this book series is so beautiful, it's hard not to crave the same thing. I never had the chance of having close friends like Lena, Tibby, Carmen and Bridget are, and reading made me wish I had something like that so bad. No matter what happens, no matter the distance, they still stand strong. They would go across the world to help one another and they will be there for each other no matter what happens. Yes, sometimes it gets hard and complicated, but isn't what friendship is about? Being there for the other when they need you the most and together, moving mountains.
What makes me love this book is that we can all identify ourselves one way or the other to the four main characters. I recognize myself a little in each of them. Just like Lena, I am shy and I don't open easily to other. Like Carmen, I am insecure and can sometimes be a little too loud when you know me well. Tibby and I are both quick to judge, but we can also change our minds once we get to know the person. Bridget and I are probably the most different, but we both have our dark places where we crawl in every once in a while, even if we don't love it. We try to hide under a mask, but deep down, we are both hurt. I grew up with these four girls and it's amazing to reunite with them once more. I cannot wait to pursue my rereading and see them evolve.
I think all teenage girls should at least read this once in their life, because we can all recognize ourselves in those four characters.
