Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur

5.0

This book was definitely a difficult but worthwhile read. Firstly, the way it is written was ingenious; I really liked the way Shakur would alternate between chapters detailing her trial procedure with chapters recounting her childhood and young adult life. I think it contextualized and helped inform the reader why and how her views and revolutionary spirit were developed over the years. I also feel that the book itself imbued in me a new understanding and sense of how corrupt the justice system is more than we already understand it to be and also shows the plight of the BLA and BPP in a light that the formal education system in the United States fails to show us and instead villanizes. Definitely, an enlightening experience and glad I followed a good friend's recommendation!
