The Professional by Kresley Cole

3.0

I went back and forth on this book. I really liked the characters; they were complex and nuanced (especially the hero), and the heroine was realistic in her reactions. I liked that she stood up for herself outside the bedroom, even though she was the sub in this BDSM relationship.

I didn't realize this was a BDSM book when I first picked it up. It's fine though - I'm good with those. I was a little disappointed about how quickly they jumped into bed with each other. I'm a bit tired of all the insta-lust that seems to be in almost every romance these days - no getting to know each other, no building of sexual tension. Just - "hey, he's really hot!" and bang! Right into bed they go. Thankfully, there was more to this story than the sex (though there was plenty of that).

That said, I almost stopped reading it a few times because the emotional unavailability of our hero roadblock kept coming up over and over without much resolution. EVENTUALLY, they worked it out, but the author just kept temporarily patching it with more hot sex, and then it would come right back. Kind of annoying and she almost lost me.

But I persevered and finished the book. Overall, I liked it well enough for a 3 star review, mostly for the original environment and situations, and the well done characters. But I think a lot of authors - this one included - need to remember that the story shouldn't be *about* sex, but rather that the sex is there to help the story.
