i thought the beginning of this story was good, but found the middle and reveal to be a bit boring. i thought the crime that was committed was engaging and interesting, as well as flavias attempts to solve it, however it seemed all a little boring once the reveal happened at the end, plus it felt a bit easy to solve. in fact, the reveal seemed a little far fetched in some areas
like how i assumed that mrs tanty and the magistrate were working together on this. they both had a part to play in collicutts murder, and mrs tantys parrot knows the magistrates first name.

that being said, the way the book ends is a huge bombshell cliffhanger that made me very excited for the next book. i love that there is still a back story for the characters outside of whatever mysteries flavia solves.

looking forward to the next.
