The Dog Stars by Peter Heller
5.0

The Dog Stars has sky-rocketed its way near the top of my favorite books! As many people have said, you can't help but compare it to Cormac McCarthy's The Road in many ways - the subject matter, the style of writing and general absence of most punctuation, and the overall tone. While I also loved The Road, The Dog Stars spoke to me in a way that the other didn't. I guess you could say that, if possible, The Dog Stars isn't quite as dark and provides glimpses of hope throughout the story. Beyond that, the story felt very real and very close to what I could imagine life being like following an apocalypse of this scale.

Hig, Bangley, and all of the other characters were very complex and I found them each to be likable in their own way. There wasn't a moment when reading this book that I wasn't totally engrossed. I gobbled it up from beginning to end!

This was one of the books I won in a Goodreads giveaway but it's one that I would have been more than happy to purchase on my own. It's a must-read for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction!
