Sorcery & Cecelia: or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot by Caroline Stevermer, Patricia C. Wrede
4.0

A fun magical romp, Jane Austen style, of two young Regency ladies who's curiosity gets them embroiled in a murder plot to steal power from magic users. Of course, debutantes, society blunders, and hero's abound.

This is first in a series about Kate and Cecelia, following the two heroines adventures (including husbands). It is appropriate for a younger teen reader as well as adults, and is a good step up for fans of Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles. For those that love Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series, definitely check this one out.

While it does have some of the 'cant' (slang) of the time, this is essentially a fantasy story and takes liberty with real facts or situations that might be expected if this was being written as a historical romance novel. Honestly, I've seen so many inaccuracies in Regency novels nowadays that maybe I'm growing jaded!

This book was originally conceived as part of a "letter game" where authors Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer wrote letters with alternating chapters to each other; each author picking a character to focus upon.

This means that the book alternates between two storylines that in the end converges into one for the finale. It also means that the plots don't dovetail as well as one might wish, but if you take that into considering going into the story, I feel it is overall fine.

The later books keep the same alternating POV's with "letters" but the authors did not use the letter game to conceive or write the books, so they are a bit better organized in pacing.
