The Prose Edda
by Snorri Sturluson
The Prose Edda's exploration of Norse mythology and explanation of skaldic poetic practice is fascinating in itself, but the Penguin edition brilliantly elucidates the complexities of old Icelandic and Scandinavian verse as well as providing thoughtful asides on the difficulty of translating a language where one words could mean many different things - and all reasonably so in the context of the often strange and heavily symbolic tales of the Aesir, the Vikings' original gods.
It's also worth noting the way the author(s) synthesizes Norse legend with Greek myth and Christian religion. Must read for mythology lovers!
