The Robots of Dawn by Isaac Asimov
2.0

I read Asimov and renew my wonder and thanks that Ursula le Guin was a contemporary of his and has a huge body of work that boldly sees much wider and better possibilities. Her work also gives the lie to any “well that’s just the era as it was” excuses made on Asimov’s behalf.

There are some interesting ideas here and background to the later empire and foundation novels that are my main interest, sparked of my having watched the Apple TV version of Foundation and been hooked into wanting to read the books and gain a deeper understanding.

But there’s also a lot of just creepy, voyeiristic, harasser, sexist, misogynistic, male gaze fantasy and gender essentialist shit in this book that’s genuinely off putting. This book would’ve been better if shorn of all that - and it would’ve also been a lot shorter.
