The Passage by Justin Cronin

4.0

Really really good story about the end of the world. A virus has been unleashed and the 12 infected, infect others turning them into a vampire like animal. Only one girl was originally infected and does not turn into a vampire (smoke, viral, flyer). Amy is the key to stopping the original 12. All the virals are connected to the original one who turned them. The story gets long at points as it changes. At first the story is of the man who goes around finding criminals that volunteer to be a viral. Then this man rescues Amy and takes her to live in a Californian cottage while the world devolves around them. Then Amyives in and runs into a colony. It's 100 years later and the colony survives by using lights at night. Peter, Michael, Alicia, Sarah, Caleb leave because they are going to be out outside of the walls. They have found that Amy is old and may be the key. They attempt to take her to Colorado but also find a society that lives with an agreement with one of the originals, Babcock. They escape and find Peter's brother Theo. Their and his girlfriend mouse who is pregnant end up living in a farmhouse and have the baby, narrowly escaping death at the hands of mouses husband turned viral. Peter and Amy make it to Colorado to find one of the Catholic sisters Lacey is still alive and she shows them how to kill the original 12. Together with the Texas army which Alicia has joined, they kill Babcock. They split in the end of the story, one group going to live in the city where the army is from and the other to kill the originals.
