What Did You Do? by Jeneane O'Riley

2.0

The first book confused me in the fun "what am I reading and what is happening and why can't I put it down" way.  The second book confused me in the not-fun "what am I reading and what is happening and when can I put it down" way.

The first book was so weird and quirky and strangely endearing.  The second book felt like it was written by a different author for a different series.  The tone and writing style were considerably different, the characters were entirely different (by design in some cases), and the plot was completely different (again by design).  While some of these differences WERE by design, they were jarring nonetheless, making me feel disconnected from the characters and story.

This book provides lots of background for the characters, so prepare yourselves for multiple POVs and many time jumps.  Personally, I always find this immersion-breaking when the jumps and switches are constant, but I do know that many readers prefer this.

While I will not continue with the series, I will still recommend this to readers (one reader's negative experience is another reader's positive).  If you are looking for a fantasy romance that reads differently from most of today's popular fantasy romances, you enjoy the more traditional type of faerie stories with Seelie and Unseelie courts and their strict magic laws, you may enjoy this!  The ratings in the series so far say that I am not in the majority here, so I encourage readers to pick it still up if they feel drawn to it.  Unfortunately, it just wasn't the series for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Bloom Books for an advanced digital reader copy of this book.  All opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
