Fakers
by Lucy Lennox, May Archer
Fakers is a small-town, fake relationships romantic comedy with all the sweetness you need today!
Brooks, the successful marketing specialist living in New York, takes his coworker, Paul back to his hometown as his boyfriend to get everyone off his back about his sexuality. Plot twist... Paul is straight.
Ava, Brooks's ex girlfriend goes back to their town from LA for the festivities but to avoid the humiliation of their past she takes her gay best friend, Mal as a fake partner.
And then in the middle of small town crazy Brooks falls for Mal while Paul falls for Ava.
This plot is hilarious on its own but add the stereotipical southern small-town feels and charm and you get a perfect romantic comedy. Licking Thicket (yes, that's the name of the town and yes there are infinite puns about it) is the southernest of southern towns in Tenessee with cows, sweet tea, barbecue, overdramatic mothers, gossip and way more traditions than necessary. And of course there are the sweetest people who celebrate the town's founding at the Lickin' festival.
I laughed sooo much at the puns and emberassing but cute situations. On top of the hilariaty of this story the characters and their pasts gave it a deeper meaning.
Brooks is a people pleaser so coming out as a teen fearing to disappoint a whole town was hard on him and he ran away for ten years because of that. Mal had rough young years in a different but much more bigoted town. He became a hardworking, talented artist despite all that but his confidence issues run deep preventing him to trust easily.
All the other town's people and friends in the book provided a sweet and funny atmosphere to their blooming relationship during events like the Lickin' Lope (running while carrying 5 gallons of milk), the Artists' Fair (the place of revelations), a round of 'I have never..' (getting deliciously drunk) a bachalor auction (everyone wants the handsome new guy) and a disatrous Dance (it was truly disastrous).
Read if you need some light in your life!❤
