The Deep End by Julie Mulhern
4.0

I regularly end up signed up for way too many StoryGraph challenges, but this is also how I find myself discovering unexpected gems, so I can’t complain too much. I needed a historical murder mystery set in the 70s for the historical mysteries throughout decades and centuries, while this book had 3 more days left in the Audible Plus catalogue, so the stars lined up and I found a new series I’ll have to follow (because I don’t have enough of those, apparently).

Set in Kansas City, Missouri, in the early 70s, it’s incorrectly marketed as a cosy (just look at the cartoonish cover). It’s actually not. It’s a smart and fast paced mystery with a dash of social commentary, set in the rarefied upper class, rich , country club going set. There is a BDSM sex club, mention of orgies, a jerk of a cheating husband, a complicated mother-daughter relationship, a dog that is both a menace and a hero, an attractive policeman, an attractive lawyer, and Ellison, the main character at the center of all of this mayhem, who is an adult woman on the path of rediscovering herself. The time and place are well created, the story engaging and intelligent, with some good sharp writing. Unexpectedly fun and engaging read. With the right director and set designer, this would make a great TV series.
