Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
3.0
After recently seeing a movie loosely based on this classic, I decided to read the original source material. Being familiar with the story helped me to understand Jane Austen’s style of writing, because having read Pride and Prejudice, it takes a while for me to grasp. But at the same time, I also found it wasn’t all that complicated to understand. The story is more about the relationship between the two sisters than it is about romance, which isn’t a bad thing.
For the most part, I skimmed. These characters don’t seem to do much besides sit around and talk, usually in long monologues. However, I know that it’s a classic for a reason, and there were parts I was able to understand and enjoy.
When it came to the characters, I had mixed feelings about them. I liked Elinor and Marianne, and disliked characters such as Fanny Dashwood and Mr. Willoughby, but when it came to the rest, I didn’t have much of an opinion.
Overall, I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I think this is one of the books that I’d have to read again to better understand it. Which will have to be sometime in the future, as I want to move on to something else now.
