the handmaiden is one of my favorite movies, and for years i had no clue it was based on a novel. the film adaptation cut out the third act, and now having read the third act, i understand why, while i wouldn't say it is bad, it is definitely the least strong part of the novel.
anyways, this is a dark and interesting book and i would highly recommend it (thought i would also very much recommend checking the content warnings if you have any triggers). and, i do think i would have enjoyed it even more if i had gone in not knowing the plot.
