My Life as an Alphabet by Barry Jonsberg

4.0

Barry Jonsberg writes the best characters!! Candice Phee is a thirteen year old who I would like to be BFFs with. She is extremely literal, loves reading the dictionary and Charles Dickens and special needs or not, she just wants everyone to be happy. And by everyone, that means her mum and dad, her rich uncle brian, her atheist-leaning pet - earth-pig fish, her teacher with a lazy eye Miss Bamford and her friend/future husband Douglas Benson from another dimension. She reminds of Ricky Gervais's character, Derek. Kindness, truly is magic.
'You see, I want to pursue happiness. I want to catch it, grab it by the scruff of the neck, drag it home and force it to embrace all the people I mentioned above. I'm just not sure how to accomplish this. But I am determined to try.' - page 69.
This story made me laugh and made me cry. It made me happy. Well done Candice, well done.
