This author has written two of my other favorite books (Rules of Civility and Gentleman in Moscow). It is long - about 600 pages - but a fantastic historical fiction set primarily in the 1950s. After being released from a work farm, 18-year old Emmett is ready to pick up his 8 year old brother and head west to start their lives anew. But he discovers two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the warden's trunk and have a different plan all together. It takes place over 10 days and told from multiple POVs. Normally I dislike POVs, but it was such a multi-layered story and you really got such a great perspective on all the characters. It's both wide and deep, so you have to be willing to dive in - but it's worth it.
