Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

4.0

this is one of my favorite gothic novels of all time for a myriad of reasons, but coming back to jane feels comforting.

reading with a modern eye, yes a lot of the book is dated and Rochester is particularly vile throughout most of his appearances in the first 75% of the book - but he isn’t the point, right?

jane, for when it was written, was taking steps that most women wouldn’t dream of in order to protect herself and better herself. imagine never being able to even consider independent dreams and reading a book where the heroine declines the advancement of a man in exchange for her own self respect? she’s an astonishing character for the time period!
