“Thank god for girlfriends. In this crazy, chaotic, divided world that was run by men, you could count on the women.”

I want to be clear that I did LOVE this book, but compared to Hannah’s others it’s not a 5 star read. It lacked emotional punch for me and felt very predictable.

I would read a user manual for how to watch paint dry if it was written by Kristin Hannah so I still ate this up. The writing is beautiful and the story is well paced and thought provoking. I know I am very much in the minority with a lower rating.

The first 200 pages felt fast and chaotic and I know that is purposeful bc we are in the midst of war but it made it devoid of any depth for me. Once Frankie was stateside Hannah does a great job of showing the emotional turmoil of Frankie’s PTSD but I still didn’t feel connected to her character. I just found myself cackling at the predictability more than anything. Which I think is what contributed to my lack of emotional connection.  I still had a damn good time reading it. I can’t get in to specifics without giving anything away though.

In true Hannah fashion the friendships make the book. They are why we’re all here and why we keep coming back. No one does female friendship like her! 🥹👏🏼 Barb and Ethel are down ass bitches and WE LOVE THEM!

Overall: if you like Hannah’s other books or historical fiction in general grab it you won’t be disappointed
