Warrior and Witch by Marie Brennan

3.0

I rather liked the first book, but I debated on giving up on this one.

Mirei felt more like Miryo than Mirage. She lost all her intelligence and spunk.

I didn't like the young doppelgangers much at first. A couple of them grew on me though. The whole part where she had to not let them know how weak she was now sucked. I hated that she lost all of her warrior strength and reflexes.

I missed Eclipse. I liked his few chapters but he needed more page time. Especially with Mirei.

I didn't like the alternate POV with the Void Prime. I didn't like her, and for one of the leaders of the witches she wasn't very smart. All of the politics and her dealing with the bitchy witches was just annoying.

About halfway through we skipped ahead a few months and I hate when they do that. I didn't like Mirei's new politicking role.

There wasn't much magic in the first book. (At least cast by the main character) so we really first got to see how magic really works in this one. Musical magic systems have been done but I still appreciated how it all worked.

My favorite thing about these books was
Spoilerthe relationship between Mirage and Eclipse. That they loved each other like siblings. (and there was no romance) Then at the very end of duology she kisses him out of nowhere. Seriously?! A man and a woman can just be friends. It made no sense that she suddenly felt romantic towards him.

Other than that stupidity, I liked the ending. It was actually the best part of the book. (Even if Mirei was weak and didn't do much.)

Overall this book made me decide to get rid of the first one.
