Babel by R.F. Kuang
4.0
adventurous challenging dark emotional informative mysterious sad tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I had very high hopes for this novel, largely because it's so popular right now and because I recently finished the Poppy Wars trilogy  (and hoped this book would be even better than those)! The writing is very good and the plot very intriguing. Selfishly I wish there had been more digging into Victoire and Remy as characters or perhaps more chapters from various characters perspectives would have aided the slow parts of the narrative. I will continue to read everything Kuang writes, her novels feel so fresh. I love the commentary on colonialism and also white women- chef's kiss.
