Last Seen Wearing
by Colin Dexter
I grew up watching Morse on a Sunday night, and it's fascinating to see that in these early books at least, his TV persona was a lot more sanitised. He is a proper 70s maverick copper, (though thankfully not in the violent and shady Gene Hunt/Life On Mars way). He drinks (a lot) and drives, is incorrigibly pervy, a class-ridden snob, and is often so, so wrong it's a wonder he still has a job. For all that, it's very entertaining. I love modern forensics shows and it's incredible to see how little detectives had to go on back then.
This mystery in particular is worth reading because it will make you very thankful for modern society.
