the last time I read this book was *checks notes* 2009 so it’s safe to say I was curious if this lived up to the same hype as it did in my middle school days… and it did y’all it really did 🫣
for a YA series, this storyline is so political, powerful, and goddamn addicting! katniss is THE icon, the moment, and I have to remember that she’s only a teenager herself sometimes 😩 the way she went through all of those emotions and trauma and still has a semblance of a soul just shows her character
and peeta, my lil camouflage bread boy!! I’m so pleased that I’m actually enjoying his personality a lot more on my re-read! it gave me desperation at first, but knowing how the sequels played out, I soaked up every innocent moment with him 🥲
there’s so much more rawness and messaging that I never noticed as a teenager myself reading these - and I love how suzanne set up her prequels and sequels in this one without even realizing it 😅 although I did forget how abruptly this one ended, like GIVE ME MORE UNREQUITED LOVE THX
and finally, I highly highly appreciate how this story doesn’t revolve around the love triangle itself. katniss and gale are just friends, and her relationship with peeta (while adorable and cute) was built on the need for survival … which left more room for the plot itself!
now onto more trauma as I continue this re-read 👋🏼
