Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
5.0

Jeffrey Eugenides has a masterful command of the English language and in case that's not enough, he has woven an epic story of a Greek family whose descendants eventually give birth to a hermaphrodite, whose experiences and emotions the book explores from birth to adulthood. There is such complexity and depth to the story that you become immersed in it. I also love that he explores life in Michigan, particularly Detroit, through some of the ups and downs of its past. This book takes a little investment to get to the really good stuff, but is is well worth it in the end.
