My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier
5.0

Knowing that the author is female, I was surprised and fascinated that du Maurier wrote the story in the first person from a male character perspective. Up until the scene when Phillip chokes Rachel, I was very much on his "side" and believed his delusions and skewed sense of reality. This scene shocked me, and I began to really question Phillip's reliability as the narrator. By the end of the book I was convinced that he had gone crazy. I felt badly for Rachel and the accident which led to her death, because it could have been prevented, except that Phillip made the choice to not warn her about the temporary bridge and its instability.

Many of the characters in this book had flaws, but they were also fascinating. I loved the mystery and suspense throughout the novel. This was my first book by Daphne du Maurier, and I will definitely read more of her books!
