I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. I liked it, but it also felt like it was lacking a bunch of things that I normally enjoy.
Since this book is set in a new setting, with new characters, it spends a lot of time just worldbuilding. Not a problem at all, as I love seeing what direction the author takes the world. A lot of time is spent setting things up that don't pay off in this book though, but hopefully they'll be important in the next?
The same could be said of characters. Largely I feel as if we are introduced to characters, but the author (chaotically) decides to discard them for now and we never really hear from them again.
While I liked this book, I feel that I didn't get a full story from this book. I feel like it was part 1 of X, rather than the first story of a larger saga.
