I wish the author didn't spend so much time on exposition; she often tells with commentary what she has already shown with dialogue, which to me felt like a writing style more appropriate for young readers than adult fiction. 

That is the one thing that takes away from what is otherwise a very painstakingly researched, a-treat-to-read 1920s Bombay.
