The Body: A Guide for Occupants
by Bill Bryson
After the fifth example of how the human body is both a marvel of indefinable wonder and evolution gone wrong, I had a throwback refrain stick with me for the entirety of this book:
"And I am FLAWED! But I am cleaning up so well..."
That's how I view the human body.
This book is a sensible reminder of what we are and what we truly need to make us healthy. Not much is new here, but the facts will scare you straight.
This is also a reminder if you do all the right things, you could still randomly die tomorrow. And if you do all the wrong things, you could live until 100. Basically, we're all just playing percentages and we'll all lose one day. Fun!
This book was published mere months before COVID-19 became a thing. So the chapter on diseases and medicine now reads as a dark comedy instead of a grave warning.
If you need more reminders on how the illustrious US of A stinks at healthcare, add this book as a referral.
Bill Bryson rules.
