Champion of Midnight by Debbie Cassidy
3.0

While the world and the plot is interesting, I am not a fan of the writing at all. The book is written more like a stream of consciousness than a structured novel, and I found that much of the dialogue and sentences tended to be made of less than 5 words. It made for very stilted reading. Additionally, there was also too much descriptive telling going on instead of just showing and letting the reader draw their own conclusions. A random example:

I exhaled. It was just a room, a beautiful room, not a cage. Not this time anyway. The seat by the fire beckoned, but I needed a book first. Something to pass the hour.

As a result of the writing, I didn't feel many emotions when characters were killed off or betrayed, or even super invested in the FMC Serenity finding out the shocking truth of the origins of Arcadia. So much action happened in the book with characters getting kidnapped for one mysterious reason or the other and the brief chapters on the House games with a twist due to new character introductions. Relationships between characters were very surface-level, and we didn't find too much information about underlying motives. This series is ridiculously slow-burn - other than Bane and an admission of attraction for Ryker in the first book, not many other male characters in the cast stand out as part of her potential harem.

Serenity herself was also a super irritating character. She spent most of the book whining about how things weren't going her way, either from circumstance or her own mistakes. She repeatedly acted like she was such a bad-ass but was usually unable to actually fulfill the role and relied on the other men in her life to support her. When she does step up, it's usually from Mary-Sue-like suddenly developed confidence from her secret abilities.

I'm honestly only sticking to the series because I've seen other reviewers mention that it gets much better after the 3rd book. This book was very much a meh to me, similar to the first. This is the 2nd series by this author that I haven't been very enthusiastic about so far.

P.S. Cassie is such a bitch. Worst character ever.
