This book is a bit of a tongue-in-cheel modern version of a golden age detective novel, with a fourth-wall breaking narrator. He talks about the structure and process of writing a detective novel, while presenting a detective novel.
It's a very ambitious concept. While I enjoyed it, the main part where it unfortunately fell a bit short was the actual mystery. The denouement just felt quite messy, given the lampshading throughout that framed it as a solvable puzzle.
I feel like I'd read more from the author though. He did bring me in, but just the end needed some pruning and the final twists make be wish I had a spread sheet
