Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food by Paul Greenberg
4.0
This isn't just a book about fish -- specifically salmon, sea bass, cod, and tuna -- it's a book about the ocean, the species that live in it, and the people who eat them. The author notes that humanity has selected four mammals (cattle, swine, sheep, and goats) and four birds (chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese) to domesticate as food animals, then explores whether the time has come to select four fish to domesticate and husband. The alternative seems to be wild-catching seafood with the abandon of the past until species like the bluefin tuna are driven to the point of extinction.
If you eat fish -- even if (and maybe especially if) you're the environmentally-conscious type who makes the choice to eat only "sustainable" species -- this is likely to be an eye-opening read.
