Woodworking
by Emily St. James
I listened to this book as an audiobook for the Rainbow Reads Challenge. I found the topic really interesting, especially since I have very little personal connection to it ā which made it all the more engaging for me. The alternating perspectives (Abigail in first person, Erica in third person) and the choice to omit the dead name were, in my opinion, brilliant literary decisions.
However, what really brought down my rating was the persistent uncomfortable feeling I had about the teacher-student dynamic. On top of that, I found Abigail increasingly unlikeable and annoying at times, especially when she broke the fourth wall ā though that might have been influenced by the audiobook narrator.
The setting around the election and the political themes were well executed. I also found the author's afterword very moving. Overall, Iād definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to broaden their horizons.
