Water, Water: Poems by Billy Collins

i don’t generally read poetry books and when I do I don’t rate them 5 stars.  But this one is a gem that hit perfectly. I received it from Ann Patchett’s First Editions club (thanks to a birthday gift from my sister). Ann Patchett’s intro to the book says “let’s face it, this has been a hard time, and in hard times poetry can be just the thing.”. How right she is. Work and my husband’s health issues were weighing on me and then I picked up this book of poems. It was just the thing. I mean, is Ann Patchett ever wrong?. I loved these poems about every day occurrences, viewpoints and items, from paintings to snowflakes, to B.C. vs A.D, to typewriters to listening to Percy Sledge in the desert and contemplating Emily Dickinson in space- these poems are delightful. This book is going on my desk so I can pick it up and read a poem when I need to be comforted, delighted, or entertained. Billy Collins’s poems are just the thing you need even when you didn’t think you needed them.
