A must read by anyone struggling with shame. I spent my life reading about the struggles of people of my own race and it left me where it leaves so many. Blind, racist and ignorant. Hearing these perspectives on being black and experiencing vulnerability and shame really creates new pathways of empathy and respect for the lives of others who have completely different and often much more unfair life experiences. Understanding that privilege that I experience daily are not shared by those of different color, sex and gender makes me look at the world and how I exist in this world differently. I wish more people I know would open themselves up to these stories and perspectives. Sadly ignorance and denial claim most. I loved this book and thought it was incredibly moving and important.
