Shards of Time by Lynn Flewelling
5.0
It's been years since I read the other Nightrunner books, and to be honest, I didn't even know this one was out until I was looking at what Lynn Flewelling had written lately a few months back. Finally got my hands on this from my local library.
I enjoyed it; perhaps not as much as the early ones as they were such a new phenomenon to me (a gay couple in fantasy that just 'were' and had no real issues being so), but this is a worthy addition to the series. The established relationship has now settled into what any relationship should be, though there is a small issue of whether Seregil considers Alec a true 'equal' and not in need of his protection; I think it's resolved admirably by Alec showing how well he can manage as an individual adult, without any loss of face by Seregil.
The magic in this story is as fascinating as previous stories, and it does become a bit of a page-turner later on when everything begins to get desperate. It's nicely resolved without becoming too cliche, and kept my attention throughout. I love the way Flewelling allows her characters all their own foibles and strengths without falling into any particular tropes. Excellent book!
