Book Review: In the Shadow of Blackbirds
Rating: 4.5/5

In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters offers a unique blend of historical fiction and paranormal storytelling, set against the backdrop of the Spanish flu pandemic and the end of World War I. What sets this book apart is its integration of spiritualism with the historical events of the time, a combination I haven’t encountered before but found really interesting.

The theme of desperation—what people are willing to believe or do in times of crisis—was particularly compelling. Having lived through the COVID-19 pandemic, it was fascinating to read about some of the wild remedies from the Spanish flu era, like eating onions for every meal or putting salt up your nose. Those small historical details added authenticity to the narrative.

The characters were realistic personalities, and the vivid descriptions made it easy to picture the haunting and emotional atmosphere of the story. The mix of history and a paranormal mystery made this a fun read.

Recommend for fans of historical fiction with a twist, looking for something that’s not too heavy.
