I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

5.0

Well, I think I’m Glad Her Mom Died too. I hope Jennette McCurdy never has to do anything she doesn’t want to do ever again. This was definitely worth the hype. In case you have somehow avoided the talk about it, this is about McCurdy’s deeply toxic relationship with her abusive and mentally ill mother, and how her entire life grew to revolve around and eventually unravel due to this relationship. None of this is even a little bit glamorized; not her ED and addiction struggle, not even her descriptions of fame and “fortune”.

There is definitely a whole lot you will learn about her that you could have never gleaned from TV, even if you grew up watching iCarly every day after school. It is definitely one of the most serious books I’ve ever read but McCurdy is so good at perfectly sprinkling her natural humor into it. The audiobook also gets bonus points for being narrated by McCurdy herself. Lots of TWs abound; this book can be very upsetting (mostly ED, verbal/sexual/physical/emotional abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and parent illness/death) but you can always reach out if you want to know more before you read. Read this one!
