I have a love hate relationship with this book. Some aspects of it I adore, other parts made me cringe. Overall, it’s pretty mid.

I can see why it’s popular. This is a book I would recommend to new readers. It’s fast paced & the reading is easy. However, as someone who reads a lot I found this to be a downfall. I felt like there was so much information lacking in places & the writing felt very YA which is fine when I’m reading YA but this book felt YA but with explicit sexual scenes & that felt wrong like they didn’t match. (I’m a fan of YA & spicy books but I didn’t like the mix in this one because YA & spice don’t go together)

I could go on & on about the different plot holes, easy foreshadowing, or issues I have with this. However, I think that my biggest issue is this is “enemies to lovers” & I genuinely think that “fated mates” or “grumpy sunshine” would of been a better trope for the relationship in this. It was so abundantly clear who the main character was going to end up with the entire book. I just think enemies to lovers was the wrong trope in getting them together.

I loved a lot about this book: the dystopian feel, the school setting, lots of characters, magic, this book felt like true escapism, & the DRAGONS. Oh boy, the dragons are the best part of the book & my favorite characters.

I am a little underwhelmed by the ending because I saw it coming from the beginning. I was wanting it to be true but disappointed that’s how the book ended because it felt so obvious.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with it but it is definitely overhyped. I think I might have enjoyed it more if I wasn’t expecting so much from it. It’s everywhere right now & so popular online like I truly expected something more. Oh well, I will read the second book because I was entertained & I adore the dragons. Can I get a book of just the dragons?
