----

I stumbled over this series while poking around on Amazon one day. I liked @JohnBirmingham's other books (Axis of Time), so I thought I'd give this a try, despite the reviews here.

I'm glad I did.

I really enjoyed these book(s). I see what the other (negative) reviewers are complaining about, but it just wasn't an issue for me. The book hits quite a few things I enjoy -- a superhero origin story, military fiction, urban fantasy (ok, not quite what I normally think of, but what do you call "real life" with some monsters thrown in?) some smart-ass characters (but not too many) and good pacing.

I just kept turning the pages, and that's all I wanted out of this series.

The three books (so far) in the series were all out when I got into it, so I just blazed my way through the entire series. I don't think it's necessary to write reviews for book 1, book 2 and book 3 -- they're essentially three parts of the same story. If you liked the first one, and don't find the things in the other reviews to be troublesome to your enjoyment of the book, then you'll like all three of these.

I'll watch for another book in the series, the door was left wide open.
