The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
5.0
4.5 ⭐️ I finished this in less than one day bc it was THAT good. this reminded me a lot of jd barker's the fourth monkey (another book that is one of my favs <333)
things I loved: believable YA characters, great pacing, so many twisties I didn't see coming at all!!! Michael <3. very neat concept. honestly surprised this book is YA because of how fucked up the murders are alongside the very graphic, gory descriptions of the violence! the concept of the naturals, seeing the real-time deductions (which I felt was really lacking in the inheritance games, so this was fantastic!!!)
things I liked: barnes knows how to write a love triangle!!!
things I didn't like: at first I took issue with the sudden romance, but then I remembered being 17 and how that makes you not very rational and all of the feelings that come along with that time in a person's life. I didn't really like the ending with Lacey's death and how the last few chapters played out. in a way Lacey felt a bit too crazed, and it felt kind of unbelievable how she passed all the psych evals, but maybe that just speaks to how deceptive she truly was. there's a certain je ne sais quoi that I can't explain, but it's why I can't find it in myself to give it five stars.
